Love Isn’t Instant — It’s Chosen

February is often filled with hearts, roses, and grand gestures — but in rescue, the kind of love that truly changes lives is quieter and longer-lasting. It’s the love that shows up every day, sticks through setbacks, and keeps choosing a dog even when progress isn’t instant.

This month, we’re celebrating commitment. The fosters who say “we’ve got this” on hard days. The adopters who understand that trust takes time. And the dogs — like Calvin — who have been waiting patiently for someone willing to choose them not just for a moment, but for a lifetime.

Real love doesn’t rush. And when it finally finds its way home, it’s worth the wait.

RECENT RESCUES (10)

Frankie is a 1-year-old, 50-lb pittie with a heart as big as his smile. He’s the kind of dog who makes you feel chosen—always happy to be by your side and soaking up every bit of love you’re willing to give.

This sweet boy is house trained, great on leash, and fantastic with other dogs. He’s social, easygoing, and has no possessive behaviors, making him a wonderful candidate for a multi-dog household or an active family who enjoys walks, outings, and companionship.

Frankie’s one request? He doesn’t love being left alone. He’s a people-dog through and through and would thrive in a home where someone works from home, has another dog for company, or can continue helping him build confidence when alone. With consistency and reassurance, Frankie is already showing how eager he is to learn and please.

If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate companion who will happily walk beside you—literally and figuratively—Frankie is ready to be your best friend. 💙

DOG BEHAVIOR AND TRAINING 🐕‍🦺

Each month, we will be featuring a trusted trainer and a topic near and dear to your hearts.  If there’s a topic you would like them to cover, please reply to this email.

Your Dog Isn’t Being Difficult

Micah Saint Germain - San Diego

When someone tells me, “My dog is being difficult,” what I really hear is, “I don’t understand what my dog is trying to tell me.”

Living with a dog who barks, growls, or pulls on the leash can feel personal, but behavior is simply information. It’s a dialogue. If there’s one thing I wish I could tell every pet owner, it’s this: Dogs do what works. Whether they are seeking relief, scavenging for kitchen scraps, or burning off nervous energy, they are simply repeating behaviors that get results.

When we label a dog “stubborn” we miss the message and lose the chance to fix the situation. Instead, we need to ask: What does my dog get out of this behavior? Consider the mailman. The dog barks, then the mailman leaves. It works every time, so the behavior now has a purpose. On the flip side, if we ask for a “sit” over and over with no reward, that behavior loses its purpose and the dog stops doing it.

The owners who see the most change are those who pay generously for the things they want and identify the “why” behind the things they do. Your dog isn’t being difficult; they’re giving you the answer. Start listening closer and watch how your relationship shifts. It’s a challenge, but that’s what makes training fun.

Interested in learning more about this topic? Keep an eye out for Micah’s blog post going live on February 15th!
