The Hard Truth About Rescuing

Rescue isn’t always the heartwarming highlight reel people see on social media. Sometimes it’s messy, exhausting, and emotionally draining.

The past few months have been a tough season for rescue. Adoptions are slower than we’ve seen in a long time, shelters remain critically overcrowded, and more dogs need help than we have space for. Every day we are asked to step in for dogs who have run out of time, and every “yes” depends on one simple but powerful thing: a safe place for them to land.

Behind every dog we save is a small team of volunteers navigating logistics, medical needs, transport coordination, and sometimes unexpected challenges along the way. Rescue is built on trust, teamwork, and people showing up for animals who have no one else. When that system works, it’s incredible. When it doesn’t, it can be incredibly hard on the people trying their best to make it work.

But even in the hardest moments, the reason we keep going is simple: the dogs.

Dogs like Roxy, recovering from surgery with the support of our community. Dogs who were hours away from losing their lives but now have a chance because someone stepped up to foster, transport, donate, or advocate for them.

As we head into spring—a season that’s supposed to symbolize new beginnings—we’re asking our community to help us create more of those second chances. If you’ve ever considered fostering, adopting, donating, or sharing our dogs with your network, now is the time. One open home can literally save a life.

Adoptable of the Month: TOMMY 🌟

Age: 1 year old | Weight: 70 lbs

Breed: Anatolian Shepherd | Status: #AdoptMe

Tommy is just one year old and 70lbs.  He is a happy, goofy Anatolian Shepherd pup who found himself at the overcrowded shelter in Downey, where like so many amazing dogs in today’s shelter crisis, Tommy was quickly placed on the euthanasia list.

But his story didn’t end there.

His foster stepped up and took him in to save his life and the rest is history.

Tommy is everything you’d hope for in a young dog: happy, gentle, and full of life. He’s already neutered and house trained, and he gets along beautifully with dogs of all sizes and even cats. He is great on leash and has done amazingly at our adoption events, which can get a little rowdy.  He truly just wants to be part of the action — whether that’s playtime with furry friends or hanging out with his people.

Now all he needs is the one thing a shelter could never give him: a forever family.

Tommy has already been given a second chance at life. Let’s find him the home he’s been waiting for. 💙

🚨Emergency Paws - Foster Needed by 4/15🚨

We have an amazing pup looking for a stable landing spot.

Bear is 1yo, 60lbs, and will need a foster starting mid-April after his board and train.  He is SO dialed in during training and would do well with someone who can provide structure and routine.  Bear is house and crate trained, good with kids and dogs and has learned manners!

Trainer support will be provided to help with pack integration through adoption.

If you or someone you know can open their home to this pup, please have them send in a foster application at homeboundhounds.org/foster 💙🐾
