Everyone has felt the impact of the slowing economy. We are all paying more for gas and are feeling the rise of prices for other necessities as well. It becomes increasingly difficult to keep up with the cost of living and is naturally more difficult for some than others. August is national Clear the Shelters month, so the plight of animal rescues has been in the news recently and with that has come an increased awareness of the crisis faced with an increase in animals in shelters and rescues but a decrease in adopters. From large organizations like the Humane Society to small rescues like Homebound Hounds, the stark rise in pets being relinquished due to financial hardship and a decrease in potential adopters for the same reason is reaching the point of crisis. Nevertheless, Homebound Hounds (and other rescues) continue the work of saving and caring for animals to find them forever homes.
So, how can people help if they are not in the financial position to adopt and care for a pet or make a monetary donation?
The answer is to become a foster. When you choose to foster, you open your home to animals in need and help animal rescues like Homebound Hounds continue the work of saving dogs and other animals from homelessness and often euthanasia. When you foster, you make room for rescues to take in more animals in need. As a foster myself, and an adopter of many shelter dogs, I can attest to the sense of fulfillment that comes from opening your home. Often people say they would not be able to foster as they would “foster fail.” I said the same thing before I took in my first foster almost a year ago. But I didn’t fail. Although I loved all of my fosters, I went into it knowing that they would not be a forever member of my family and when they found their family, I was truly so happy to see them go. I was able to give them love, a sense of security and the opportunity to be a dog in a safe environment, sometimes helping them overcome fear, anxiety and/or health issues. Every foster dog is different and has different needs. Fostering is not always easy, but most rescues provide foster support and Homebound Hounds makes that a priority.
If you would love to help homeless dogs or other animals but cannot take on the financial responsibility of adopting or making a monetary donation, consider becoming a foster. The only cost to you is time, love and patience but the return on that cost is unconditional love and a sense of fulfillment that is hard to match.

For the first time ever, this section is blank — and not because there aren’t dogs who need us.
After a record-slow adoption in July, August had a record number of dogs returned or rehomed back into our care. Today, nearly 30% of our pack are dogs who were previously adopted and have come back to us.
Every return means another foster home, training expense, and financial resource that would normally allow us to say “yes” to a dog sitting in a shelter. Right now, we simply don’t have the capacity to save anyone new.
We hope this is temporary. But until more of our dogs find committed forevers, our focus has to be on the dogs who are already counting on us.

Meet Pudgey, a beautiful 5-year-old, 45-pound English Bulldog. Pudgey came to Homebound Hounds after having been neglected by her previous owner and relinquished to a shelter. Although she has had a rough time of it recently, she is a loving, happy girl who is the epitome of a dog's resilience and innate ability to love unconditionally. All she asks in return is the opportunity to hang out and cuddle with her people. Pudgey is crate trained, house-broken, good with other dogs (she has become best friends with her foster brother), happy, healthy, and easy.
If you are interested in bringing a new family member into your home and are concerned about the time commitment needed with a new dog, Pudgey may be your answer. She is low energy, fun-loving, already trained, and just wants to love and be loved. She will be an incredible addition to any loving home.
